Conductor Nicholas McGegan conducts the Columbus Symphony this weekend at the beautiful Southern Theater, with concerts Friday and Saturday March 2 and 3 @8pm and Sunday March 4 @3pm. I chatted with him briefly after the dress rehearsal, asking about his detailed knowledge about the composers lives, including numerous humorous anecdotes, and how it informs his musical interpretation. We also spoke of the early use of clarinets in several pieces on the program, and his ability to convey a meaningful style of playing to the orchestra through his gestures in conducting. He also mentioned his delight in working with the four soloists from our orchestra, Leonid Polonsky, violin, Luis Biava, cello, Randall Hester, flute and Stephen Secan, oboe.
